This piece is a modern take on the Lover's Eye. During the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries "lover's eye" miniature portraits became a trend. These portraits - depicting the giver's eye - would then be presented to a loved one for them to wear - whether set in a ring, brooch, snuff box, etc.

New York-based jeweller Gabriella Kiss was a former apprentice to Ted Muehling. She is known for her attention to the delicacy of the small scale, the ‘microcosm in the macrocosm’, as she says.
